Crime and Punishment: Marmeladov
Crime and Punishment, written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, has a wide range of characters that interweave between each other to allow this novel to bring up many different issues that the main character, Raskolnikov faces. Marmeledov is the first person who Raskolnikov converse with in a month; the narrator portrays Marmeleldov as a drunk who drowns in his own sorrows. Marmeledov's actions show us of what might have happened to Raskolnikov if he hadn't meet Sonia, and if Sonia hadn't introduced Raskolnikov to the Bible. Specific techniques that the narrator used to portray Marmeladov drunken character are imagery, characterization, and point of view. Marmeladov's poverty was obvious and his frequent visits to the tavern were noted by the people surrounding him. The jacket Marmeladov wore in the tavern had only one button left on it, and he had buttoned the last button to cling to his last trace of respectability. And that the fact is that he had slept on the Neva, for five nights. "Well I've just come from one and it's the fifth night I've slept so..." Marmeladov problems in his family are the cause of him running away. He is afraid to go home
We can see that Marmeladov is trying to run away from his problems, by drinking them away. And from his sister Dounia he learns the power of staying strong and still being able to forgive. "He was drunk, but spoke fluently and boldly, only occasionally losing the thread of his sentences and drawling his words. Knowing that he has married a wealthy wife, and is not able to keep her happy bothers him. His own daughter, Sonia, is forced to prostitute her own body to make some money for the family. By drinking he feels or is trying to stall the whole state and situation he is in. He doesn't want to face his reality. The introduction of Marmeladov at this point is key. " This just proves that what ever we are reading is coming for Raskolnikov's point of view. The people that love him help him change. Raskolnikov starts to believe in the words of God, that he reads from the Bible. without any money because of his wife, and he fears the state of poverty he and his family are in. Its not the narrator, because we see personal references and comments made in this section. We don't know if we, the reader, are going to get long with this character or are we going to just let the crazy man talk and not pay any attention. It seemed quite probable that he had not undressed or washed for the last five days.
