Beauty
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." This saying has been true for many childhood fairy tales. In Susan Wilson's modern day "beauty and the beast" novel Beauty, there are many conflicts that make it difficult for the tragic couple Leland (Lee) Crompton and Alexandra (Alix) Miller to live happily ever after. Since 1624, when their two families traveled to New England, a member of the Miller family has painted a portrait of a Crompton aristocrat. Following family tradition, Lee asks Alexander Miller to paint his portrait. Yet due to his illness he sends his only daughter Alix to New Hampshire to paint the portrait of Lee Crompton. Upon arrival to the Crompton mansion, Alix finds herself in unwelcoming territory. Mrs. Greaves, the housekeeper, treats Alix
His only contact with the outside world is the local newspaper and his popular books of mystery. Alix soon understands the reason for Mrs. She finds herself in love with the most unlikely of heroes in the end. This heartrending story will fill the reader with feelings of eagerness and desperation as they envision and hope for this couple to find their happily ever after. Yet, somehow the hint of hope remains. The ending will leave the reader feeling downhearted and disappointed of the outcome of the story. His beautiful soul is what Alix is in love with. During Alexander's final days, Alix did as much as possible to care for her father with little to no moral support from Mark. However, Lee cannot accept that anyone could fall in love with him. She soon realizes that painting Lee would be a true challenge; she "was attempting to make the grotesque normal. as someone with an ulterior motive and appears very protective of her employer. Unlike the fairy tale ending that everyone expects Beauty is not that predictable. Yet Lee comes to stay with her and even helps her care for Alexander.
