When Pablo Manalo read Coņotations, the Ateneo audience was relieved to some extent because the humor and boldness of the poem helped erase earlier doubts the modest book promotion was only going to waste time. Because the book was successful in entertaining the audience and grabbing their attention, the audience was somehow compelled to get a copy of his book, explore its mysteries and also understand the reality Pablo Manalo was trying to reveal through the book. After the program, most rushed outside to get a copy of the book because they were not only expecting to get a lot of good laughs but they also hoped to be more aware of changes in their culture that they should not be so proud about. Coņotations does not fail to impress primarily be . . .
With Coņo, were more or less trying to change our nationalities because were not behaving the way we Filipinos, who through time have set themselves apart from other countries because of the richness and authenticity of their virtues, are expected to. Thus, Coņotations of Pablo Manalo wakes us up and encourages us to reflect upon this reality that is leading us away from who we should really try to be. What is being corrupted here is our respect for our own means of expression, and our national pride. Moreover, the poem intrigues students from Schools where the well-discriminated culture of coņo unfortunately exists. This hurts the image of our country because its encouraging us to betray the image that all Pinoys should have and love because most probably people find more composure and confidence in being Coņo Thus, this only means people who support the Coņo movement are ashamed of the Philippine image. Coņo is trying to mold a personality and image in us thats borrowed from other cultures. What is molded because of Coņo is not anymore a distinct kind of attitude that distinguishes us from other countries. Cono is disgracing our own language because its only using our native expressions like naman, puwede, talaga to add a little flavor and spice to how things sound. I am well aware that it is now very hopeless for us to resist the influence of the western culture and that weve already learned to welcome and appreciate English; however, in Coņo, were insulting our culture because were loving the English style of expression more than ours. However, the more important purpose that this poem and the book is determined to fulfill is to be able to stir up the emotions of Pinoys and help them realize that something should not be dominating and corrupting. People have just developed unfriendliness towards this coņo behavior because its not anymore respecting the essence of language. Therefore, this books helps re-examine ourselves and our pride, and also hopes to remind us of who we are and should be. In Ateneo, people feel awkward and uncomfortable towards coņo because people have developed some kind of bad prejudice against it.
