Marcus Aurelius' scheme of understanding as a web of belief
The great Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius collected his thoughts and reflections in "The Meditations." He embraced stoicism so much that he spent much of his life time investigating the stoic philosophy and it became his approach to life. The main pillar on which these stoic thoughts are based is the change experienced by human beings.Marcus tells that just obeying fate is natural and there is nothing wrong with it. "The works of the gods are full of Providence. The works of Chance are not divorced from Nature or from the spinning and weaving together of those things which are governed by Providence...There is also Necessity and what is beneficial to the whole ordered universe of which you are a part. That which is brought by the nature of the Whole, and preserves it, is good for every part. As do changes in the elements, so changes in their compounds preserve the ordered universe (BOOK II, 3)."`According to this thought the gods are a greater power that pervades the whole universe and pervades man. Aurelius explains about the law of Logos and how it changes and directs the universe. It is Logos' entity which exists together with the gods and also in all things. Logos controls the structure and arrangement of nature; there are
It means that human beings can complain about their fate which is created by the gods but they can't create their own fate. If one lives for reputation or wealth, it is only temporary happiness that will be obtained. Logos/the gods sees humans as a part of the universe. Human beings can't live with doing everything that they want. Don't waste of time on frivolous things. And the power we all have in ourselves must be used for maintaining the beauty of our soul, or to be a decent human being. But suppose those who will remember you to be immoral and the memory of you everlasting; even so, what is it to you (Book IV, 19)?" It is a very short time that humans live in the world. many chances of different things happening but the thing that actually happens takes place because it is good for every part of the universe. Humans should make their minds satisfied with what they're doing, leading a life of virtue. For example, like a director or writer, God is who assigns a part to people, human beings the actors in a play. Man has intellectual power, the ability to figure out things for themselves and to retain their thoughts no matter what other things pressure them to change their thoughts. Therefore, it's a vain act that people fear the events which will happen consequently in the future. Don't live concentrating on what others think about you or your physical well being.
