             Was Macbeth a Cold-hearted Killer or a Man possessed
             by Supernatural Events beyond his Power?
             This question is one that is not easy to answer because the events in Macbeth are rarely straight forward and on many occasions one event or choice indirectly affects others. The argument is also by no means 'black and white' and there are more than two conclusions: because it can also be said that Macbeth was both and changes from one to the other during the course of the play.
             Macbeth's character certainly seems to change over the duration of the play but there are many consistencies in his character for example he is a fighter and will by no means give up easily. This can be seen in the second scene at the very beginning and also at the very end where he refuses to yield to Macduff. He is ambitious: this is possibly his fatal flaw, and he never loses this characteristic.
             The first contact that Macbeth has with any supernatural characters is on the moor where he meets the three witches who prophesise the imminent arrival of his new titles and that Banquo's children will succeed him to the throne. The first of which is soon proved to be correct.
             Lady Macbeth then calls up dark sprits to aid her in the killing of Duncan. Finally Macbeth goes again to the three witches and again they tell him of the future describing three people or events relating to his downfall.
             Macbeth displays two sides to his personality: the generally moral and good as can be seen in his actions in the first battle, and his ambitious and rash side as can be seen when he orders the murder of Macduff's family.
             When Macbeth first meets the witches he is hesitant to believe them, and indeed he is also at first disbelieving when Ross delivers his new title.
