The Murder of Emmett Till

("Through the Wire" by Kanye West)Kanye West wrote this song lyric because he knew how badly Till's face had been disfigured. Lynching was very popular during the 1950's mostly toward blacks. Lynching was ignored and no one ook action against lynching untill Emmett Till. Emmett Till was 160 pounds, talked with sass, and dressed sharply. The murder of Emmett Till was the spark of the Civil Rights Movement because his death received national attention, for the first time blacks had the law on their side, and violence in the South was ignored until his controversial death.
             Emmett Till was murdered the night of August 24th, 1955. Many are still unaware on how or why he was murdered. What is known however is that he was coming from Chicago to visit his mother's relatives in Money, Mississippi in his 1941 Ford ("Murder of Emmett Till). He then stopped at Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market. While outside he was dared by the locals to go inside and to talk to the whit woman working inside. Some say that he whistled at her others say that he grabbed her and made sexual remarks. Ms. Bryant said in court " He grabbed my wrist and then made a lewd suggestion. 'Don't be afraid of me baby. I been with white girls before.'"(Kallen 325). The fact of the matter is that he did something he was not supposed to down South. In the North that might have been okay, but not here in Money, Mississippi. When Mr. Bryant found out about this he had to do something because if he did not then he will lose respect and his reputation from the town. Three days after Till had done whatever he had done Bryant and his brother-in-law J.W. Milam took Till from his uncle's house with force.
