Sikhism

             Religion is a system of thought, feeling, and action that is shared by a group and that gives the members an object of devotion; a code of behavior by which individuals may judge the personal and social consequences of their actions; and a frame of reference by which individuals may relate to their group and their universe. (Columbia 1). There are many religions in the world. Declared social outcasts, the founders of the Sikh religion created a haven that unified the ideals of multiple cultures that surrounded them. Sikhs are followers of Sikhism, an Indian religion that originated in the Punjab in northwest India. Sikhism preaches a message of devotion and remembrance of God at all times, truthful living, equality of mankind and denounces superstitions and blind rituals.
             Unlike other religions, Sikhism is comparatively a young religion. It was founded in the 15th Century by Guru Nanak. There are 18 to 20 million Sikhs in the world, and 80% of them live in the Punjab state in Northwest India, where the faith began. Guru Nanak was born on October 20, 1469 in the village of Talwandi, which is now called Nankana Sahib. The word "Guru" is a Sanskrit word meaning teacher, honored person, religious person or saint. (Bibliography 2) Nanak was the first of the ten Gurus of the Sikhs. He was born to parents Mehta Kalu and Matta Tripat. As a boy, Nanak was fascinated by religion and meditated a lot.
             The teachings by the Sikh Gurus are compiled in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs. The Sikhs regard the Guru Granth Sahib as the embodiment of their Gurus, who are thought of as only one person. The word Sikh comes from the term shishya, which means disciple. (Oberoi)
