Fahrenheit 451
Four hundred fifty one degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper books burn. In the book, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the firemen don't put out fires, but on the contrary, they start fires. Their job is to destroy all the books in the world. In their futuristic time, people watch excessive amounts of television and don't enjoy pleasures like nature. I chose this book to read because I like futuristic books and I think Ray Bradbury is a good author with interesting ideas. The book starts out describing the pleasures of the protagonist, Guy Montag, that come from his job of burning books one night. In the first scene he talks to this young girl Clarisse amd finds her and her questions very interesting. It is apparent that Guy has taken a profound interest in the girl. Later that night, Guy goes home to his house to find his wife, Mildred, watching television as she does everyday. However, this time it seemed a little different and Guy realizes that she had attempted suicide by swallowing sleeping pills. Guy calls the hospital and they come in time to pump out her stomach with a snake. The next morning, Mildred denies she ever tried to kill herse
Although I felt the book lacked in quality of writing, I feel Bradbury's descriptive, interesting themes and ideas gave the book a unique style that kept me interested. Later that night, Montag has learned from his wife that a car had hit and killed Clarisse. It is their goal to memorize books and eventually print them out one day to restore literature into civilization. Faber also gives Guy his clothes so the Hound won't pick up his scent. As the group sets out on their journey, they look back to see the city be destroyed by their country's wartime enemy jet planes. Beatty has ordered a mechanical attack hound after Montag. As Faber is running down the tracks, he hears on his Seashell radio that the whole community is on the lookout for him. Beatty forces Guy to burn his house down himself and the places Guy on arrest. Soon Montag starts talking to Clarisse everyday. Guy quickly stops at Faber's house where Faber tells him to run down old abandoned railroad tracks into the river to escape. Before the radio tells them all to go look out their windows, he makes it to the river and escapes ion the current. Guy resists and burns Beatty to ashes while knocking the other firemen unconscious. This disturbs Guy quite a bit and he gets thinking.
