Catullus the Neoteric
In the days of Catullus there was a revolution going on in the world of poetry. This revolution was being led by the "Poetae Novi," also known as the neoterics. These neoterics were the "new" poets for a new age of poetry. Before the neoterics came along poetry came in the form of long drawn out epics and annals. These poems were boring and lacking substance. The neoterics believed in writing short brief poems that had meaning. Their poems were more lyrical and often jovial at time. Oftentimes the poems were filled with immense amounts of emotion and sadness. The neoterics had their critics though. Many saw these poets as juvenile disgraces to society. They saw that there poems were full of parties, love affairs, and extravagance. These critics often looked for a much more nationalistic viewpoint and were more interested in the traditional way of writing. Catullus knew that these certain people wouldn't understand, so his poems, like most neoterics, were written to be read by other poets such as themselves. In many of the poems by Catullus he attacks certain writers for being utilitarian and didactic and he praises other poets for t
The Zmyrna will last longer than anything he ever wrote. It has taken about nine years for the Cinna to make the Zmyrna perfect. The old ages will thoroughly read the Zyrmna for a long time. As the poem goes on you also see that Catullus intensifies the way he addresses Licinus. And the worst girl sees that sheVows this humorously and charmingly to the Gods. While others lack the skill necessary and should not even be writing at all, whether they are charming or not. This poem goes as far as to describe the woman's love with the line: Ignes interiorem edunt medullam (The fires have been wasting her inmost marrow). There is also two more line to the poem dubbed XCVb. He then calls on Venus, the goddess of beauty, to make the vow accepted. First off Catullus makes it clear that this man is very intelligent and a very witty person. " All of these poems have given us a great way to look at the way neoterics thought. These last two lines speak of Antimachus. Catullus feels that this man Caecilius is a great neoteric poet and he very much wants to speak with him about poetry.
