Cultural Analysis of Houston
Around 6,600 acres of lush landscape surrounding the Buffalo Bayou and ten other winding waterways was purchased for a little over nine thousand dollars in 1836. Founded on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou in 1836 by two brothers and real estate brokers was Houston, Texas the city I proudly call my home. The city was named after General Samuel Houston famous for leading the Texas army to victory and the Texas independence over the superior forces of Mexico. The town was growing and served as the seat of the Republic of Texas for three years. After the capital was moved to Austin, Houstonians were determined to keep the town alive, and developed a port for shipping livestock and crops. The Houston Ship channel opened in 1914 just in time to help Houston profit from the war in Europe. Just east of Houston oil was discovered at the famous Spindeltop, located in Beaumont, which brought on the boom in Houston and forever associated southeast Texas with oil. By the 1930,s 40 oil companies were operating out of Houston. In the 1960's Houston was put on the map by the need to support NASA and the manned space flight program, so the Johnson Space Center was established just south of Houston. Also in 1965 The Harris
The upheaval of the Middle East in the 1970's drove up the price of oil and Houston's economy prospered. The Houston ship channel now ranks as one of the worlds busiest ports. In all respects I know that Houston is capable of correcting all the issues it faces, my hope is that it can do so without disrupting the city's development. The Gulf coast area has nearly half the nation's base petrochemical capacity and more than one-fifth of its refining capacity. The federal government and The State of Texas have committed to build a new, limited-access roadway connecting Houston with Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley, with the northeastern United States and Canada. Many technology companies have their headquarters located in Houston, as well as The Texas Medical Center which is the largest medical center in the world. However the future of Houston is one that I anticipate and believe the city will continually strive to be one of the major economical powers of the United States as well as providing an enjoyable place to live. The LBJ Space center for one is something that has always fascinated me. The biggest issue I wish for Houston to resolve is the pollution in and around the city. However the 1980's proved different over speculation of real estate and oil priced caused the economy to deflate to an all time low. Yet ozone is the only one of six criterion pollutants in the Houston region that does not comply with the one-hour National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS). Houston is considered the energy capital of the world and energy is still the main player in Houston's economy; however the city is greatly benefiting from a concentrated effort at diversification in the business sector. This poses a problem to the Houston area since the NAAQS is designed to protect public health. The city had not such experienced such prosperous times and people were moving in at the rate of 1,000 a week and there was a since that there would be no end to new riches. This project will enhance Houston's role as an international trading and distribution center, which will require continued long-term promotion of this corridor.
