Cloning
Human cloning for reproductive purposes is a highly controversial and widely misunderstood issue that must be carefully examined and decided upon. The media has promoted ignorant responses to this issue by bluntly attacking the possibility of using cloning and paying little attention to its context and therapeutic nature. Human cloning for reproductive purposes is a therapy for infertility aimed at giving individuals who have unsuccessfully exhausted all existing methods of reproduction another chance to procreate. According to the President's Council on Bioethics, critics have unfortunately given a science-fiction, mystical connotation to human cloning that implies that armies of xeroxed Hitlers and unnatural, subhuman clones will inevitably result (President's Council on Bioethics par. 7-9). However, any individual created using this method is legally and ethically a human being that can feel, think and live the same as any other. It would have been a tragedy if America had listened to the critics' negative opinions of in vitro fertilization. The book Human Cloning and Human Dignity states, "myriad claims have been made that human cloning carries the possibility of devastating social and individual effects;
Somatic cell genetic transfer is the scientific term for reproductive cloning. Why should a new way of creating a family be an assault on parenthood (Robertson 17)? In the end, it comes down to the very question of whether an individual liberty should be forsaken; after all, as two members of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission noted: "The presumption in favor of individual liberty stems from a consensus within the United States that one of the most important values we share is a commitment to personal autonomy. Of the two, the former is really the only true plausible risk when considering the context of this therapy and is, perhaps, the worst of all possible outcomes (Kass 44). Though not a perfect fifty-fifty combination, the result is the best possible end for this couple. Scientists have stated: "In addition, human reproductive cloning has few feasible potential deleterious effects. This technique would remain inaccessible to those without the financial means, and they would be left behind, disadvantaged from birth. Reproductive cloning would introduce a different kind of inequality, allowing the rich to get richer in genes, which could be considered an ultimate, permanent kind of inequality. Yet, we must look at the effects in which could happen. The other potential physical harm is chromosomal abnormality, which could result in genetic disfiguration and possible diseases. In this process, an individual's DNA is placed into the nucleus of an egg that has already had its original DNA removed. Past legal cases, such as Roe Vs Wade, have already determined that decisions about how to procreate is one of the individual's most basic rights.
