To the residents in Odessa football was not just a sport, but a mere matter of life. In the book, "Friday Night Lights" by H.G. Bissinger, he shows how the team is primarily made up of "meatheads" who lived for nothing but football. Permian's successful high school football team has won the hearts and Friday nights of every resident in Odessa, Texas. In 1988 Bissinger visited Odessa and spent an entire season observing their talented football team. Bissinger's opinion on Permian High's school and football team about not caring about anything but football is agreeable. Bissinger recalls how a vast majority of the players are not very educated and are better off playing on the field and how the school does not do much to educate their students. Take Boobie Miles for example, senior star running back, who was taking a math course that most students took as freshman. He could barely read the letters sent to him from top of the line colleges for full ride scholarships. The only place that blacks were accepted was on the football field, but this would only apply to those that excelled in football. A teacher that spent more time and money on his education than a football coach got paid less than the football coach. It will increase their chances in getting an NACC award and get recruited to a good college.
