O'Connor Paper

The writing style of Flannery O'Connor is a riveting and shocking one. The way she formats her stories gives the author full control of every situation and allows her the ability to completely change the motion of the plot. Many commonalities are used in her different short stories and if one is a frequent O'Connor reader, the ending will begin to not be as surprising. O'Connor tricks the reader into being sympathetic of the characters, who may seem innocent, but they are truly exact opposites. This paper will identify the underlying factors and symbolic commonalities in both stories. The symbolism behind what happens to the main characters in each of O'Connor's stories "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and "Good Country People" is similar. O'Connor uses different techniques and clues to allow the reader to create the symbolism as to how each main character in both stories is dealt with at the end. In "Good Country People" the character Joy, who later changes her name to Hulga, had a tragic shooting accident which left her with a deformity, and a extremely independent and prideful attitude. She is very rude, sensitive, envious, and has horrible attitude towards her mother. Her pride may also be boosted by the fact t

All of her deceitfulness plays a symbolic key role in having her family destroyed. Since her life is packed with unhappiness and pure misfortune, it is only fit that she meets the con man and is played and betrayed. Then the cat that was snuck on the trip happens to jump out just at the right time to distract Bailey and a cause a major car accident. (O'Connor 261) It is symbolic that she also seems to be so prideful and independent even until the point until where she climbs the ladder of the barn to show her strength and capabilities. " (Desmond 132) The Misfit doesn't like the fact of being good or bad so he chooses to be unique and in himself by just saying he is the Misfit. (O'Connor 247) In an article by John Desmond, he states ". "(American Heritage Dictionary 871) So he can't become a believer of God which is what the grandmother is trying to tell him, but he can't be recognized as a criminal for a crime he can't remember committing. When these two personalities meet they both clash not understanding each other, which is why they are able to get along and talk so well but which is also why she gets murdered in the most brutal way. The names in all the stories are important as well as hidden agendas and attitudes. She is a woman who is very protective of her son, Bailey, and always wants to get her way. The author is setting Hulga up to be a woman whose worst fear is probably to be dependent, and even though she has a wooden leg, she is determined to live her same life. Everyone else is dressed for vacation and she is dressed like she is going to a funeral to signify she is a lady, just in case they were to get into an accident on the way. This can also be assumed by her comments of her growing up on a slave plantation.
