Christina Aguleria and Lil' Kim
In "Bad Sistas," Tricia Rose addresses raps written by women that specifically concern male-female relationships. She says, "MC Lyte's and Salt N' Pepa have reputations for biting raps that criticize men who manipulate and abuse women. Their lyrics tell the story of men taking advantage of women, cheating on them, taking their money, and leaving them for other unsuspecting female victims" (Rose 267). These songs address problems that females are continually facing. MC Lyte and Salt N' Pepa are portraying these problems to forewarn women about the deceiving men out there. These songs most importantly try to resist the common double standard of society. MC Lyte is trying to resist the common standard of society by having men be addressed as tramps, rather than women.Rose's analytical approach can most certainly be applied to a much more recent example. In 2003, Christina Aguilera released, "Can't Hold Us Down," featuring Lil' Kim. Aguilera and Lil' Kim successfully resisted what they call the common double standard of society. Men are granted greater sexual freedom than women are. Augilera and Lil' Kim voice their opinions in a powerful way and inform makes that this is politically incorrect.
The scene in which Aguilera plays suggestively with a water hose was edited. People understand what Lil' Kim is trying to say, but some think that she used the wrong vocabulary in trying to make her point. She doesn't say that a male performer would get away with it, but she does feel that there are double standards and she's upset that MTV wants to censor her" (Spiegelman, Ian). On the other hand, some people may think that Christina Aguilera and Lil' Kim did not successfully resist what they call the "common double standard of society. This is demonstrating how Augliera and Lil' Kim are resisting the double stand by doing whatever they want and not caring what people think. The producer of this video, David La Chapelle states, "It's a real female empowerment song. Instead of saying that men can get away with their sexuality, she actually named sexual favors that guys can do to females. On the other hand Lil' Kim is just trying to make her point. Christina states, "The guy gets all the glory the more he can score / While the girl can do the same and yet you call her a whore" (Lyrics). On the other hand, Augliera and Lil Kim aren't hurting anyone by the way they dress. " Chapelle feels that this song is empowering because it addresses how men objectify women and now it's time for the women to start doing right back. Because Augliera was expressing her sexual freedom, MTV felt the need to edit it out. I can understand why it would be unsuitable for younger girls to view, but in my opinion I don't think that young girls should be watching shows like MTV at all. Their lyrics were too soft and did not leave a lasting impression. Lil' Kim did not sugar coat any of her words.
