Good VS Evil

             Throughout the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding associates the nature of civilization with good and the nature of savagery with evil. He represents the conflict between the novel's two main characters. Ralph the protagonist, who represents order and leadership and Jack the antagonist who represents savagery and the desire for power.
             When the boys first arrive on the island they are certain there are no adults, automatically they try to make up some kind of law and order. Ralph is chosen to be the person in charge of the group who will lead and make decisions. Jack's constant desire to be the leader is seen in different chapters throughout the book, starting with chapter 1 Jack shouts "I ought to be chief!" (18) with simple arrogance. Jack then starts naming off various reasons why he should be chief, none of the qualities he mentions are useful on an island.
             In Ralph's society everyone works for the benefit of the whole group. Building shelters and keeping the fire lit are two important issues. Jack would rather hunt and do his own thing than help out Ralph and the others. Instead of Jack helping to keep order of course, the young ones would rather have fun and hunt with Jack and he encourages them follow him. In chapter 4, a ship is spotted in the distance, Ralph sees that the signal fire is out and becomes furious. Jack soon returns from hunting with the rest of the boys, he has just killed his first pig. He has been very determined to kill a pig ever sense the first one got away in the beginning of the novel Jack quoted "Next time!" "Next time there will be no mercy." (29) Ralph starts to argue with him about the fire and how his hunters are in charge of keeping the fire lit. "The agreement from some of the hunters drove Jack to violence." (75) Jack had struck Piggy because he was angry with Ralph; Jack is seen to have no control
