Racism in Othello

             Many people, throughout time, have seen or read the play Othello, and every one of them has their own critique on the play. But as Eliot says," anyone as great as Shakespeare, it is probable that we can never be right" and he follows with," [I] f we can never be right, it is better that we should from time to time change our way of being wrong" (126). What he is basically trying to say is that there is no one that is absolutely right about his or her analysis or critiques on Shakespeare's work, because he wrote it and he is the only one that will know for sure. With that said, the following people are different academic critics and theater persons that have different interpretations on the play, Othello.
             In Earle Hyman critique titled, Othello: Or Ego in Love, Sex and War, he directly says "Othello is not about jealousy or racism" (24).... Then he continues to say that, "The play is about ego" (24). He applies using ego in a good manner as Mother Teresa did and he applies using evil in a bad manner as Adolf Hitler did. Then he continues to apply ego as being good in love, sex and war, but in moderations. Hyman points out why Othello had to have such a large ego. He says," Othello has to survive in a white society and therefore has to think more of himself, and about himself, than is really good for a man" (25), and because of his ego he wasn't able to come right out and ask Desdemona was she cheating on him as soon as the accusations were made. Hyman also reveals that there is a little too much ego in Desdemona also. He says this because she could have easily asked Othello was he jealous when he asked where her handkerchief was, but instead she turned to Emilia asking where the handkerchief could be.
