Should Human Cloning be Banned?

Cloning is defined as a form of genetic engineering in which the DNA of a person, animal, plant, or even a bacterium is used to produce a perfect or near-perfect genetic replica of the original. Abolishing human cloning before it begins, has been a controversial debate since the 1940s. Many researchers believe that, regardless of whether a law is passed to eliminate cloning research or not, human cloning will eventually become a reality because it is an inevitable consequence of scientific advancement. The controversy raises fundamental questions about how technology affects our lives and the consequences we will face in the future.
Who will be cloned and why? Are humans playing God for a living? Is cloning a safe procedure? This essay will elaborate on reasons why human cloning should be prohibited before it begins. Bringing back the deceased is said to be the most common motivation cited by those interested in human cloning. The growing numbers of people who desire to clone a lost husband, wives, child, or relative is steadily growing. The idea that the clone of a dead person will be a complete replica of that person is a misconception. As those familiar with the technology often point out, cloning a person will duplicate only his or her physical appearance and other genetic elements, not the person's personality and memories. "Even if humans were cloned, they would merely look like each other, not be exact copies in fact; twins are more alike than clones would be" (Morell, Ethics of Genetic Engineering 104). The biological reason for this is that the clone's cells would have mitochondria from the egg donor, rather than the nucleus donor. Clones would only become an appearance substitute with a mind of their own. If a grieving family decides to clone a deceased family member and the genetic clone is wicked and malicious, what will the family do? Should they "exchange" it for another clone? Or live in misery with the corrupted clo...
