Schindler's List

             The true story of Schindler's List takes place in Krakow, Poland from 1939-1945. It tells of the journey of Oskar Schindler, war profiteer, womanizer, and Nazi Party member, who becomes the unlikely hero and savior of about 1,100 Polish Jews during the Holocaust. Schindler lost his wealth but gained salvation for many lives and the descendants that would spring from those lives.
             One main character, obviously, is Oskar Schindler. Schindler was said to have been very handsome, and thus was adored by all the young women; however, he was married to a woman by the name of Emilie. He is essentially a con artist and moderately successful businessman who recognizes the potential for profit in wartime. He buys a formerly Jewish-owned enamelware factory and uses bribery to obtain contracts to make war supplies. At the beginning of his quest to become rich, he is apathetic towards the Jewish situtation, which he sees merely as an unfortunate result of the war. He is a playboy with a large ego who routinely cheats on his wife and joins the Nazi Party not because he believes in it but because it will help him make more money. Schindler is initially concerned only with himself and the success of his moneymaking scheme, but later undergoes a change
             that urges him to spend his fortune to save those unfortunates' lives. The reasons for his sudden change is never clear as it was in real life, but it is possible that the great amount of respect he had for his Jewish accountant, Itzhak Stern, and the sight of the little girl in the red coat, had something to do with it.
             Another major character is Itzhak Stern, Schindler's Jewish accountant and conscience. Stern is a very intelligent man who never loses his pride in the face of the violent and dehumanizing conditions the Jews face under the Nazi regime.
