Gaston Mother's Role

             There is a saying in my country-"people learn how to be parents after they have children." This means people understand how to take care of their children after they have their own babies. However, some people do not realize that parents' behavior affect their children a lot. For instance, the mother depicted in the Story "Gaston", written by William Saroyan. We cannot see what kind of person the mother is because the author did not depict about the mother directly. Nevertheless, we can picture the mother when she talks to her daughter and the way her daughter acts and talks. The daughter lives with her mother in New York longer than she lives with her father in Paris. Based on this situation, the mother seems to have full control of her daughter. She loves her daughter, but she does seem to show much patience toward her. The mother is a realistic and wealthy person who likes to socialize.
             The mother has power over her daughter. For example the mother tells her daughter "[Gaston] is [only a bug]," and her daughter agrees with her by saying "We will have to squash [Gaston]." (line 155) The daughter now speaks in a tone like her mother, strong and firm. After father comes back with peaches that contain people, she tells him that she squashed Gaston because she thought "everybody squashes bugs and worms." (line 187) For the daughter, Gaston is not a "person" anymore. The daughter changed her point of view from Gaston being a person to Gaston is just a bug. All these changes on the daughter are just because of a phone call from her mother. These events explain that the influence of the mother on her daughter is huge.
             The mother is unlike her father. He is the person who teaches his daughter the idea that "the important thing is what you want, not what I want." (line 114) The mother is more like a person who tells her daughter what to do. For example, she tells ...
