Young Goodman Brown vs Minister Hooper ondealing with life

In Hawthorne's Ministers Black Veil and Young Goodman Brown, both stories revolve around the discovering of evil in both main characters. Brown in Young Goodman Brown is an average man, who you would think could be easily influenced by society. Hooper in the Ministers Black Veil is a minister, someone society would view as an example of a good Christian, or even someone who does not or could not sin at all. Hawthorn makes it clear in both stories that evil lies within anyone, no matter who you are or what is around you and it is everywhere whether it is your town or even with in yourself.Brown discovers in the story that the people in his town are a part of a cult. He goes from being unsure of his faith to seeing the truth about his town and losing faith in the people of his town including his wife Faith. In this story, "Faith" Brown's wife can also symbolize "Faith in God". However, Brown does not necessarily lose his faith in God but in

Hopper wears a veil over his face, which made the people of the town feel very uncomfortable, especially because no one knew why he had chosen to do such a thing. The veil that Hooper wore could not have been comfortable. After experiencing sin and finding evil. He sees how sin corrupts and becomes very disappointed and depressed about it. Both characters portrayed huge amounts of guilt or sorrow after their enlightenment with sin. Hooper and Brown react so differently from each other. Many people can forgive other people for their mistakes (sins) but beat themselves up over the mistakes (sins) they make. It is like a way of torturing himself because he does not feel forgiven. He is not sure whether or not it was a dream that his wife and the other towns people were apart of a cult. We think of it as a symbol of him hiding his secret sin. The thought of it however, was enough to make him isolate his true feelings from everyone else around him. They both dealt with it in different ways but it is clear that in the end both characters were not able to forgive themselves. In the same way, Brown kept his feelings inside and tried to go on with his life, he wasn't able to forgive himself or forgive what he saw so life became an uncomfortable and depressing place.
