Beowulf is an epic that was told orally for centuries and finally written down by a monk in the tenth century. Its epic hero is Beowulf. Beowulf is a widespread hero. He is known for his many battles. He fought battles that not just any ordinary man could fight. Throughout these battles, Beowulf reveals symbolism. Symbolism, in this epic, is important to the reader. It gives the reader a completion to the background of an action or a characteristic. The epic hero, Beowulf, is symbolically revealed through the Anglo-Saxon's way of life, through the battle with Grendel, and the final battle with the dragon.Throughout history, the world has been made up of evil men. Some people say that every individual is born with evil in them. In Beowulf, the evil creatures are within the demons of Cain. The chief evil driven demon presented in Beowulf is Grendel. Grendel symbolizes the exact opposite of what the Anglo-Saxons moralized. Beowulf is the embodiment of what every Anglo-Saxon envied. To be a true hero, one must have symbolic meaning behind ones actions. To protect his pride, he knows that he must not back down from this battle. Victories over his enemies require superhuman power and strength, characteristics only symbolized in Beowulf. The two of them head to the dragon's barrow. Beowulf's bravery is symbolized through his determination. "When Beowulf is dying, he thinks more of his wisdom as a ruler than of his great deeds in war. "Beowulf must now save his own kingdom from the fiery depredations of a dragon, whose anger has been roused by the stealing of a cup from the treasure hoard it has been guarding for three hundred years. All but one of his crew back out, Wiglaf. Before long, however, the aging warrior focuses on his responsibility as protector and prepares to face the monster in battle". A true hero has the probability of being great, and they are highly valued by their fellow peers, through nobility, and great deeds. Grendel arrives at night not knowing this will be his last taste of blood. Grendel is lost in thought, confused. When Beowulf reaches the king, he explains his purpose. He reveals his characteristics through symbolism.
