In ancient human cultures, myths were used to systematically explain the things that they did not have the scientific knowledge to understand. Heroes in these myths were used to teach people about right behavior, honor, morality, and ethics. Mythical heroes usually fit a certain mold, from their extraordinary origins, to their incredible feats of heroism, and their ultimate victories. In the modern world we occasionally hear the names of these ancient heroes. Names like Hercules, Jason and the Argonauts, and Gilgamesh. But we don't often hear about mythological heroes in a modern context, or do we? Has modern human culture, even in this technological age, given rise to tales of epic heroes, and modern heroism?

             The mythological hero almost always has an origin that could be considered unusual or extraordinary. Heroes such as Achilles who was dipped in a holy spring by his mother to make him invulnerable, and the aforementioned Hercules, who was the child of the god Zeus and a human woman. The same kind of amazing origins can be found in those of the comic book superheroes.
