Discipline or child abuse: The thin line
Discipline or child abuse: The thin lineA mother has told her daughter to stop drawing on the walls; gave her time out, only to find her daughter once again drawing on the walls. Finally, the mother spanks the child. Is this child abuse or discipline? Child Protective Services (CPS) says abuse, the mother says discipline. Spanking is a very controversial issue; I will define discipline and abuse and give examples of when spanking goes from discipline to abuse. Discipline is treatment that corrects or punishes (Webster's New World Dictionary (1999)). Discipline can range from restrictions from activities, time outs to spankings. All of these things correct wrongs and punishes including spanking, fitting the definition of discipline. There is a thin line between spanking and abuse. Abuse is to mistreat by inflicting physical harm (Webster's New World Dictionary (1999).) Many might say spanking fits this category because it is physical, and the sting on the bottom hurts the child to a certain extent; but abuse doe
Not angry, vengeful forceful hits with belts and switches. Take for example the mother caught on tape at a Wal-Mart beating her child in the parking lot. This is the correct way to spank because you should never hit a child in an angry manner or anywhere on their bodies except for their bottoms. After most kids get a spanking they are upset but they always confined in that parent and go to them for comfort after they have received the spanking. Spanking should never be done by an angry parent. Anger clouds our vision and usually makes us do things we don't mean to do which is unacceptable. This beating was abuse because the mother was angrily hitting the child in the face, arms, and legs and could have easily done some serious damage in her rage. Instead of beating a child when angry a parent can calmly explain to the child that what they did was wrong and that they will get a spanking. During this time the parent will have had the time to calm down and the child will know why their being punished. CPS along with other groups put a lot of focus on spanking when they should be more concerned with real abuse, instead of a simple disciplinary action sixty three percent of Americans choose to use (Spanking with love/statistics). " Like in the Columbine shootings many people still blame the parents for Dylan and Eric's actions. How can parents discipline their child when they don't have that right? They call that right abuse and place them behind bars. Innocent parents are everyday accused of abuse when they are disciplining their children. Then when children do something violent they want to blame the parent, saying things like "the world can't discipline a child discipline should be done in the home.
