Was European War inevitable in 1939

Was European War inevitable in 1939?In order to answer that question, one must consider the causes of the war and the circumstances that led to the tremendous success of the Nationalist-Socialist party in the first place. Also, had Hitler planned a European War or at least considered it?Facts are that after the treaty of Versailles Germany was left with the sole war guilt, with hardly any military forces and with a great loss of territory in Eastern Europe. In the public mind the harsh terms of the treaty of Versailles and the hard economics of the Great Depression seem to be two standard explanations. For almost a decade Germany was excluded from the international community. It did not join the League of Nations until 1926 or participate in the Olympics until 1928. The German inflation was devastating due to reckless wartime borrowing and fiscally disastrous post-war expenditures. Long-term unemployment was affecting blue-collar workers as well as white-collar workers, men, women and children were malnourished and many lost their confidence in the government. Between 1928 and 1932 suicide rates increased 14 percent for men, 19 percent for women . But not only had the economic troubles supported Hitler's rise, as inflati

Other European powers interpreted this as the reestablishment of German honour and no suspicions arose. Hitler not only believed in anti-Semitism but also in anti-communism, which were contained in the Fuhrerprinzip (leadership principle). During the first four years of his dictatorship, Hitler ensured in all of his speeches that all the German people longed for was peace. Hence he took a European War at least into account. As I mentioned before, such assumptions would be unhistorical. ' I believe that Hitler was fully aware of what was at stake and that risking a European War was something he considered, as the 'struggle to survive' is man's task in life, according to his book 'Mein Kampf'. 'The first task of German foreign policy', stated Hitler in the 'Secret Book',' is primarily the creation of conditions which make possible the resurrection of a German army. A different kind of evidence is to be found in Hitler's foreign policy, which also leads to the assumption that he planned war on other European Countries. 'Mein Kampf' revealed much of Hitler's personality and believes, but also sets out a clear and detailed prospect on what his future plans were. But then again, Britain's and France's foreign policies were guided by their current domestic situations at that time. Britain as well as France were soothed and did not take any actions to object Hitler's plans. In March 1935 Hitler announced to no longer let Germany be restricted by the treaty and he re-established obligatory military service. ' Therefore it would have taken a rather preventive war before 1935, that is before the German army would recover its full strength or on the other hand economic isolation, as Germany's economy depended on imports of raw materials to halt Hitler's war craze. Instead of human ambition, he was driven by the fanatical belief that his destiny was indisputably linked with Germany's.
