Euthanasia

            Throughout the years in history, the controversial and debated issue of euthanasia has been brought to our attention repeatedly. I would like to clearly state why legalizing euthanasia isn't a great idea. First of all, I'd like to clarify the meaning of euthanasia. Euthanasia is the intentional killing of a human being for his or her alleged benefit. There are different branches of euthanasia such as voluntary (with the consent of a patient), non-voluntary (patient gave no consent) and involuntary (when the patient expressed a wish to the contrary). There are also two types of euthanasia, passive (withdrawing life-sustaining measures) and active (killing the patient directly, such as lethal injection).
             According to a 1997 poll, fifty seven percent of people were in favor of euthanasia with only 38% opposing. People in the 65 and over age group, the ones who are most likely to be euthanized, are 47% more likely to oppose euthanasia than the 35-54 age group, the ones who are trying to be merciful to the older generation. Furthermore, two thirds of those in favor, incorrectly defined euthanasia. Minority groups and older people generally oppose it, while healthier, younger and higher-class people, who it doesn't affect yet, generally support it.
             I believe that euthanasia should not be legalized by any means, although it is in Oregon. People shouldn't have the right to do evil or harm to themselves. Euthanasia can be compared to heroin. We do not have the right to ruin our lives by using heroin. However, euthanasia is the largest degree of ruining life, in other words it is committing suicide. Why should we have a right to do that? A request for assisted suicide is typically a cry for help. It is in reality a cry for counseling, assistance, and positive alternatives as solutions to problems. Doctors should kill the pain, not the patient.
