Child Abuse among the children in the United StatesChild abuse is a term generally the mistreatment of a child by a parent or another adult. There is no standard definition of child abuse, however. A short and simple definition can be limited to the life-threatening physical violence, including severe beatings, burns, and strangulation. No one knows how many instances of child abuse occur each year because many cases of child abuse are never reported. However, the National Center for Child Abuse and Neglect estimates that nearly one million children in the United States suffer nonaccidental, life-threatening physical violence each year. There are four main divisions of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. "Neglect is when a parent or caregiver does not provide for the basic emotional and physical needs of the child on an ongoing basis. Views about the causes of child abuse have changed through the years. Characteristics or circumstances of the abuser, the child, and the family may all contribute. Thus, adults who hurt children sometimes only intend to correct them and do not realize how easily children can be injured. Sexual abuse includes involving the child in acts such as: "« Fondling (touching the child in a sexual way)"« Getting the child to touch the adult inappropriately"« Oral sex"« Inserting fingers, penis, or objects into the vagina or anus"« Exposing oneself"« Allowing a child to watch pornography"« Involving a child in pornography or prostitution"The problem of sexual abuse has received much attention in the media. Physical abuse may happen if a child is punished harshly, even though the parent may not have meant to hurt the child. According to experts, a better solution to the problem of child abuse is preventing family members from becoming so isolated or stressed that abuse occurs. The offender gets the child to participate by using threats, bribes, lying and taking advantage of the child's trust. Despite efforts to reduce child abuse in America, more than a million children are physically abused each year; about 2,000 die. Physical abuse may result in a minor injury to a more serious injury which could cause lasting damage or death. In extreme cases, a juvenile court may place children in a foster home (Child Abuse, 2000). "« Education"Physical abuse includes anything a parent or caregiver does that result in physical harm to a child. A parent who continually uses any of the following when interacting or disciplining a child is emotionally abusing the child. Children should be urged to discuss anything that bothers them with a trustworthy adult.
