Just Pens and Pencils
I can remember my first day as a senior. We were all seated in our desk as the teacher explained that there were some budget cuts and we were not able to get new textbooks this year. She passed out as many books as she was given and then handed us duck tape to make the textbooks "brand new" again. There is a lack of funding in the education system and improvements need to be made.President Bush enacted the "No Child Left Behind" act in 2001. This plan was designed to give extra spending money to schools and improve our educational system.According to The Washington Post the government is spending the most money it has spent on education in a long time. The unfortunate part is that the federal government makes up only 7% of educational funding, state and local governments are picking up the rest of the tab. The federal government is giving schools extra money, but the law is now requiring schools to pay more money on things such as transportation, which is gobbling up that extra money given by our generous government. Murphy, a former history teacher and superintendent stated that since the War on Iraq even more education cuts have been made. Murphy predicted that within the next ten years there may be over $20 million
Education forms us as individuals, giving us the ability to form our own thoughts and our own ideas. Most schools are struggling to meet their goal, the only way most are able to meet the expectations of the state is to cut certain curriculums, such as music and art. Many of the music and art classes are now being taught by teachers with very little experience, if any, in that area. Schools would also be able to hire instead of firing teachers to reduce class sizes and also increase salaries to retain more well-qualified teachers. I think over the years a lot of people have forgotten the importance of education. When it comes to education the people should not be turning down a reasonable request. Because of this act teachers are forced by the state to meet requirements in a small amount of time. Art and music are so vital in a child's development. Schools with a lower income and more diversity are having problems meeting the law's standards. Research has shown that music and art improves a child's literacy abilities, problem solving, as well as social and academic development. Student expectations have also rose. The problem we are facing is that when the people are asked to pay more taxes the plan to improve goes back to square one. If the majority of people would agree to pay more taxes towards education in our schools so many improvements would be made in our education system. Needless to say poor and working class school districts are suffering the most from this act.
