What If?
What if? That is a question that runs through everyone's head at one point or another. Should you even bother asking yourself that question if you are never going to the answer, or maybe start planning in advance in case what you want actually comes true. In "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" mostly all of the characters ask "what if?" Every one of them either has material or emotional wants that run across their minds constantly. Out of all the characters Singer was the one who never even questioned his disability or life, he simply accepted everything in life. If he was happy or sad, the only thing he ever wanted was his friend, Antonapoulos. So what if things would have been different for Singer? Would it make a huge difference in his life? All the other characters in the book knew what they needed to fulfill them. If Mick were wealthy, she could fulfill her dreams playing the piano; she would not be a high school dropout working at Woolworths. Jake Blount needed some money also; just enough to clean him up and get him an honest job. All Jake really wanted was for people to understand his viewpoint, and maybe that would have happened later in his life. For Biff things w
Now what if Singer could talk? What would he say? He had always been able to communicate, but mostly with Antonapoulos, of course he could write notes and read lips, but he really only expressed himself to his friend. Now that he could answer their questions, would they listen? And say they did listen to Singer's answers would it change their lives? Of course all the other characters would be affected if Singer could talk. Friends would make a huge difference in Singer's life, especially friends who listened. But unfortunately Singer could not change his destiny, he could never talk, was never wealthy, and he loved someone who barely even recognized his existence. ould have definitely been different if he didn't marry Alice. Singer's life was a waste, just worrying and caring about someone who did not return mutual feelings. Could one thing really change his life that much? What if Singer had money? First it would make a huge difference if he was born into wealth or if he somehow stumbled onto it later in life. Singer could have also decided once he had money that he could leave Antonapoulos, but that would be highly unlikely since he loved him. He never even knew the impact that he had on the other characters. If Singer was born into wealth he probably would have gone to better school for his disabilities, therefore making it easier to make more friend's that would understand him better. He would not have killed himself because Antonapoulos would not have been the only driving force in his life. Would he have still committed suicide if he did or would that not have mattered? Or was Singer just a lost soul; whatever would happen to him he destiny would remain the same? No one can ever answer these questions but what if some could? . Singer knew not to ask himself "what if?", because he knew his life what was it was. Singer could have also become wealthy while living with his friend Antonapoulos.
