The Color Purple

Characters: Fonso (Pa), Celie, Nettie, Mr.__/Albert, Harpo, Sofia, Shug Avery After reading Celie's first letter, I already found some background information of her family. The father, Fonso, sexually abuses his own family members. Celie, the daughter of Fonso who is being raped by him, writes to God. I think Celie writes to God because she cannot tell this to anyone, and writing to God is the only way she can speak to a close, loving friend. Celie gets pregnant twice and Fonso sells the children away. Upon knowing this, I get the impression of Fonso as a character who is a sick and a sexually abusive man, who wants everything for his pleasure, and a person who doesn't care much about his family. For ex: Celie says, "I got breasts full of milk running down my self. He say why don't you look decent? Put on something. But what I'm sposed to put on? I don't have nothing." This indicates that Fonso does not provide for the family and they don't have much material-wise. The writing Celie uses might portray she and the rest of the children must not have had any education because it is sloppy english. I do not like how the words are organized. For ex: "He came home with a girl from round Gray. She be my age

I think the letters is what binds their sisterhood together and their love for each other is what holds them together. There was a song that Squeak sang which I really liked. This is who they are and nothing can change who they are. " I think back at the time in the South, there was a lot of discrimination of black people. "I think this is a powerful voice coming from Celie. In fact, it was probably the happiest day of Celie's life, one that she will never forget. Men dominate over women and the fact that women let men do that to them is scary. The words were:"They calls me yellow like yellow be llow is a name my name They calls me yellow like yellow by my name But if yellow is a name Why ain't black the same Well, if I say Hey black girl Lord, she to try ruin my game" I really like the words here because it is exactly what people are dealing with. Maybe it was the impact from Celie leaving him, vowing that he would suffer, just as he made her suffer; and certainly in the end, Albert does suffer.
