Does Rap Music Cause Violence
Rap music is considered to be one of the most influential types of music in the U.S. Since the late 1980's rap music has been called the Anti Christ in our culture, because of its so-called influence in people's life. People believe that the music is why people, especially the youth, resort to violent crimes. I think by saying this they are trying to cover up the real truth by giving simple answers. Rap is defined as a style of popular music consisting of improvised rhymes performed to a rhythmic accompaniment. The first rap song was made in the late 70's, when songs were seven to eight minutes long and mostly used in small clubs to dance to. It didn't really become popular until the early 80's, and since then it has become mainstream music, everyone is listening to it. In the last couple of years rap made up 60% of music bought in stores in the United States. In 1989 a local group called N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) came from out of L.A. and changed rap, which was the start of "Gangsta Rap". In their lyrics they talked about crime, street violence and killing. Once they were a huge hit, it caught on, and really that's when all this commotion began. Everyone started rapping "Gangsta" style. More
How about this: Will a deaf kid never be violent? That seems like such a silly question. However, after listening to the song, I did not feel any need to kill anyone. The part of music that is under the most scrutiny now is the lyrics, mainly because of explicit content. A local rapper that I interviewed named 'Precise' stated that: "Rap is only a way to express the way someone feels, not to cause violence. From this we see that only while the dance music is playing are people affected by it. Once the music is over, say goodbye to the energy. From the example of the dance club, we see that only when the music is playing do people dance. The child may live in the ghetto where people get shot every day, and it may be commonplace. Video games are actually interactive, forcing the kid to do the killing, punching, kicking, or whatever violence the game brings about. There seems to be one thing missing in the critics' quest to name rap music as the cause of violence in our youth today, and that something is proof. Surely this demonstrates that music causes violence, because in any other circumstance, people don't mosh. If all of a sudden the dance club turned silent, everybody would stop dancing. " (Precise, 1)Critics of violent music have strong examples of how music causes violence. That is why dance music is played; it gets the people fired up and gives them energy to go out on the dance floor and dance for hours on end. "(Postman, 26) It seems possible that music can affect everyone in a different way.
