Celebrities in Advertising

             Does the way American culture changes affect advertising, or does advertising change American culture? On the one hand, advertisers see people wearing certain clothes, including these trends in their ads. On the other hand, consumers see how people in advertisements are dressing or acting, and in return, they copy this to be like their favorite celebrity. I believe that some advertisers set the fashion style or define what is "it" this moment by putting celebrities in their ads. Everyone wants to look like they do or have what they have. When other advertisers see how people react, they too duplicate the trends. While advertisers will not do anything drastic or dramatic that will completely contradict American culture at the time- in some way, they change American culture bit by bit.
             Either way, each year, advertising changes to adjust to the way American culture changes. Advertisers use different colors, people, and backgrounds to persuade potential buyers to buy their product instead of the competition. In recent years celebrities have played bigger roles in helping advertisers sell their products.
             In the Chanel perfume ad with Nicole Kidman, the advertisers use many different devices to persuade their audience. Obviously, the main device that the advertisers use is Nicole Kidman herself. She is an enormous movie star in Hollywood who many people admire and respect. She is a beautiful, young, successful woman, and many think she has it all; the house, the family, and money. The advertisers use her in hopes that people will want to wear Chanel because they remembered that Nicole Kidman wears it too.
             Women wear perfume not only for the smell but to be desired. In the advertisement, Nicole Kidman looks sexy and sensual.
