             Whose Standard? Teaching Standard English
             How would you feel if you thought every thing that you said was wrong, getting put down and discouraged by others? Most likely you would stop talking and blame yourself for doing those things that were incorrect. Growing up, I had a teacher that would make fun of you, if you answered incorrectly in a joking matter. I wondered if some people did not take it as a joke sometimes and took what the teacher said personally. Teaching children should not be based on put downs and disappointing them. There is nothing good about teaching in this standard, it only leads to making the students feel guilty about talking in front of the class or responding to any questions at all. My reaction paper is based on the article of teaching standard english the correct way and not to just pound rules of how to write into the students' minds.
             The argument that the author is trying to make is that teaching students standard english should be an encouraging process. They should learn by working with the teacher and having the teacher giving them positive reinforcement on what they write and correct them in the proper ways. The author talked about a teacher, named Mrs. Delaney, she had when she was younger and how she discouraged her for saying things wrong in front of class. The teacher humiliated her before her classmates and she blamed herself for her faults. The author then started to find replacements for words that she couldn't say so instead of concentrating on her speech, she would think of words to replace and not even think of the conversation she was having. Later on the author became an English teacher and made sure not to teach the way Mrs. Delaney had done. She said that students must be taught to hold their own voices sacred, to ignore the teachers who have made them feel that what they've said is wrong or bad or stupid.
