It seems like Gabriel feels to proud of him to visit Ireland or maybe Ireland is not striking for Gabriel. Gabriel looks as if he really doesn't know who he is inside and creates an image for others to perceive him as a person who is conceited. This attitude makes Gabriel perceive himself better than everyone else in attendance. Joyce uses this mechanism for later events like when Gabriel is being approach by Miss Ivors and also the speech. All night long in the party Gabriel feels discomfort to give the speech because he feels as if the people in the party won't relate or understand to what he is trying to say. thers in a way that he is successful and wealthy. By comparing how his wife thinks about galoshes one can see how he attempts to, "To-night even he wanted me to put them on, but I wouldn't" (Joyce 769), Gretta shows how galoshes are not important to her even if "everyone wears them on the continent" (Joyce 769). The galoshes foreshadow how Gabriel separates himself from the rest. This attitude can also been seen when Miss Ivors tries to convince Gabriel to take a trip to his own homeland Ireland.
