Cat in The Rain
In the story "Cat in The Rain", Ernest Hemingway talks about a married couple that is vacationing in Italy. Italy is well known for its interesting destinations sought after by tourists. But what's interesting about this couple is that they don't choose any of those famous places; they choose a little town, mostly occupied by locals, which shows that they had to have some knowledge about Italy prior to their visit. There are almost no out of country tourists in this place, in fact they are the only Americans at the hotel that they are staying in. Maybe they chose this place because it is not as occupied and expensive as other places in Italy and they can have all the peace and are able to afford all the luxury they want. They choose to stay in one of the best rooms; their room is facing the sea and the public garden that's located right next to the hotel. Although, this isn't a tourist's occupied destination, it is still beautiful. The garden is full of big palm trees and green benches, where during sunny days artists liked to paint pictures of the colorful environment. They started having financial problems and those evolved into big fights. Once the baby was born, the situation got worse, since she had to stay home to take care of their baby boy and he got laid off, money became an issue. It is understandable that their options of activities were limited, but considering that this is Italy after WWI, I'm sure there are museums and historical buildings that they could visit where rain wouldn't play a role. But their families knew that they were in love so they agreed to the wedding. And then one day he came home packed all his stuff and left, heading back to his parents' house. Nobody understood what has happened, not even the wife. That made her feel like it was her fault; she was mentally suffering as a result. Some time ago I knew this young couple, they were dating for about three years and then they decided to get married. Then, she recovered and decided to face the facts, she filed for a divorce. It is a very calm and romantic place to be, and the couple is having a great time, until the day before their departure. On this last day of their vacation it is raining and the couple is forced to stay in their room. They agreed that this is the only option they had left. She would go there daily, trying to talk to him, but that didn't get her anywhere, he said that he left because he was tired working his butt off while she sits at home.
