Gallipoli
Gallipoli is a story of World War I waged by Australian troops in Turkey during the summer of 1915.This story is about two young men on their way to find adventure. They cross continents and oceans, and climbed pyramids in Egypt.Archy Hamilton works on his family's ranch in Western Australia and is fast enough that he could possibly become a champion sprinter.Archy and Frank meet at a race, which Archy wins. Frank was a railroad employee.Archy wants to enlist in the army but is turned away because he is under 21.So, they hop a train to Perth, Frank's home town, where no one knows Archy's real age. For some reason, and we never learn why, the railroad car that they are on is left behind from the other part of the train. They are forced to walk across a large stretch of desert. During the long hike they argue about the pros and cons of joining the military.
The next morning is real life and they depart for Turkey. Well, I don't want to be pushed around for the rest of my life. It was a massacre, and we see that Archy, Frank's friend, is cut down as he is running into the fray. For one magical evening the two friends enjoy the privileges of class when they sneak into an officer's ball. Frank is asked to be a runner and request that the colonel change his mind. A British colonel instructs a major that his troops have been brought into the area to draw the enemy's attention away from the landing of British soldiers about one mile away. Still, neither of these two men are yet aware of the horrors that they will endure. It's fleeting and will be gone in the morning. Frank is unable to reach his team of men before they are sent in to fight. Archy is a romantic, and Frank is a realist. "I believe Frank changed his mind about joining because he became good "mates" with Archy, he was influenced by the idea of glory, and maybe the thought of coming back an officer was better than working for the railroad. He goes to someone else, I guess a general, and that person says ok, hold off, don't send in anyone else while I consider it. The troops land on the Gallipoli peninsula, where the Australians and New Zealanders are being held to a hillside, only yards from the Turkish trenches. This order is too late, as the original British colonel insists that the major send in his troops.
