Status of Islam

In the United States we have many stereotypes of Islam and how the religion treats its women followers. In this essay I will clarify the status of Muslim women in their spiritual society along with their roles socially, economically, and politically. The spiritual aspect of an Islamic woman's life is very clear-cut, as written in the Qur'an. The Qur'an states that a woman is completely equal to men in the eyes of God in reference of her rights and responsibilities. Interestingly, in Islam women are not blamed for Adam's first mistake, as they are in many other religions. In the Islam faith they believe that they both were jointly wrong in their disobedience to God, and eventually both repented and were forgiven. A woman is no different from a man in her religious obligations, such as the Daily Prayers, fasting, poor-due and pilgrimage. In fact, a woman has some advantages over men. For example, a woman is exempted from fasting during her menstrual period, pregnancy, forty days after childbirth, and when she is nursing her baby. She is also exempted from daily prayers during her menstrual period and forty days after childbirth. A woman is allowed to make up obligatory fasting whenever she is abl

This ineligibility has been related to the natural differences in the biological and psychological make-up of men and women; this limitation has nothing to do with the dignity of women or with their rights. She is responsible for raising her children to be true to the Islamic principles and to be contributing members of society. A famous saying of the Prophet is "Paradise is at the feet of mothers. In the United States, Islamic women are given the same rights as all other Americans, including the right to freedom of religion. Today Muslim women are being forced to take part in the Western way of life mainly because of the presence the United States has in the Middle East today. Up until the age of three both genders receive the same treatment. When a woman's children are all grown, her role undergoes some changes. Although not mentioned in the Qur'an, one statement of the Prophet has been interpreted to make a woman ineligible for the position of head of state. As a woman reaches the age of marriage, she is expected to competently perform all the tasks and skills that she was taught by her mother in order to provide for her family's needs. Regardless of whether she is single or married she retains her full rights to buy, sell, mortgage or lease any or all her properties. A woman chooses this mainly because her role in society does not give her the time to accomplish any further schooling. Her possessions before marriage do not transfer to her husband. As well as a woman's right to decide whom to marry, it is also recognized that she is allowed to seek an end to an unsuccessful marriage. Islamic teachings are considerate of the fact that a woman may be nursing or caring for her baby, and therefore would be unable to go to the mosque at the time of prayer. However, many women in the Middle East are not given the same freedoms.
