About a Boy

             About a Boy by Nick Hornby is about two unusual people who meet in an unusual way. The main characters are Marcus, a man in a twelve year-old's body, and Will, a boy in a young adult's body. Marcus is your average weird boy who has occasional bursts of singing Joni Mitchell. Will is the son of a song writer who wrote a popular song called "Santa's Super Sleigh" and lives off of the royalties that is has brought him. Will and Marcus are complete opposites when it comes to the way they live, think, and even eat. Will is the biggest liar ever; he even devises a plan to meet single mums, he joined a single parents group called SPAT (Single Parents Alone Together) where he first meets Marcus. Throughout the book, Will becomes the man he never was, Marcus becomes the boy he should have been, and above all, they become a family.
             At the beginning of the book, Will is the shallowest person on the face of the earth and he loves it, but as he spends more time with Marcus, his shallow life is deepened. When Will's neighbors ask him to be their newborn's god father, he's horrified and hopes that it's all just a joke.
             "We were wondering' said John, 'whether you'd like to be Imogen's godfather?' the two of them sat there with an expectant smile on their faces, as if he were about to leap to his feet, burst into tears and wrestle them to the carpet in an euphoric embrace. Will laughed nervously. 'Godfather? Church and things? Birthday presents? Adoption if you're killed in an air crash?' 'Yeah.' 'You're kidding' ... 'Listen. I'm touched that you asked.
