Calvinism Vs. Arminism
The Debate Between Calvinism and ArminianisimCalvinism versus Arminism; two totally different ways to understand Christian faith and theology. These two different views were created and practiced by two man by the names of John Calvin and James Harmensen, which in Latin is Arminius, hence the name Arminianism. Professor Harmensen, a preacher of the Presbyterian Church of Holland, and his party were ironically asked to appear before the States General and state what their objections were against the doctrines of the Presbyterian church of Holland. Arminius presented in writing five points of doctrine concerning which he and his friends either differed or doubted. These points were later turned into the acronym, T.U.L.I.P, which stood for: Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of Saints, respectively. Many people still think that this set of doctrines was made up by John Calvin because of the name Calvinism which accompanies these doctrines, when really these believes were created by Arminius as a way to show what he didn't believe. The reason they are called Calvinism is because John Calvin took these thoughts and deiced that was what he be
So, going back to the argument about those priests, it is possible that they were once saved but at some point in time they must have stopped believing which is why they acted the way they did. According to the Calvinists this means that God picks and chooses who he wants in heaven. It's almost like God had a list that he made at the beginning of creation and if your name wasn't on that list then there was nothing you could do about it. In the paragraphs to follow I will show the argument between the Calvinists point of view and the Arminianists view for every letter of the acronym T. More or less there is no way any human being could believe and have faith in God if that wasn't what God wanted. The Calvinists would respond to that saying that, those priests must have never been saved in that first place. Now because the Arminianists believe that man does have a free will and is the ultimate deciding factor in whether or not he wants to be saved, it seems very plausible that he can say no if he wants too. With a religion that seems to contradict itself, it seems it would be easy for the non-believer to say it must not be true and to that I leave you with a favorite quote of mine. Ultimately God chose those that he knew would respond to the spirit when given to them, but in the end it was the man who deiced his fate.
