Advantages of american democracy
Every night millions of Americans turn on the evening news to get the latest information on domestic and international affairs. Unbeknown to many, the media is very powerful in that it has the ability to shape the opinions of viewers based on the way it reports the news and what it decides to report. Whether the media has a liberal tendency or a conservative can be in the eyes of the beholder to some extent, but various media can consciously lead you to believe one way or another. Bias comes in many forms, but they all have one feature in common: one-sidedness. The media is one-sided if it systematically has the tendency to suggest one answer, opinion, or conclusion. This may result from a deliberate attempt at distortion or unintentionally, but either way the effect is the same. For example, if The New York Times chooses to write badly about two opposing politicians, but one article is on page one; whereas the other is on page twenty-four on the bottom of the page, this creates a bias. Similarly, if a news channel reports only one side of a story, this is bias. This can be done by only interviewing people on one side of the issue or deliberately selecting someone based on their views. The most
Alterman does accurately point out that conservative pundits are at least equally numbered in the news but fails to point out that the three major news anchors, who are supposed to deliver the news unbiased, are the three most liberal people on television. He points out how Clinton cured homelessness simply because the media stopped reporting on the problem after he took office. To deny that Dan Rather is blatantly liberal would be to ignore the latest examples of his obvious bias. Liberal movie producer Michael Moore suggests that the media could be responsible for instilling fear in us. The two traditional political views are liberalism and conservatism. The essential difference between the two standpoints is that liberals favor giving the government more control over people's lives while conservatives believe in less government intervention. An anchor's job is not to give us his opinion, but to accurately deliver the news and let the viewer decide whether he agrees with it or not. Having been embarrassed last time by some bad calls we are trying to be careful. It would be nice to see a fix to this "disagreement" because to know you are being told all sides of the story every night would be reassuring. The first step in the right direction would be to replace Peter, Tom and Dan, especially Dan, with someone a little less blatantly liberal. By Contrast, media elites such as Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, and Tom Brokaw, unlike pundits, are hired as news anchors who are supposed to deliver the news straight and not tie in their opinions. (Bowling for Columbine) Goldberg discussed how the media treats other social issues. It's not favoring one candidate over the other.
