Great Gatsby Narration

             Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby is a modern classic, hailed by literature critics and theorists, as well as being exalted by F.R.Levis in the literally canon of high literature. Fitzgerald's method of narration is obscure, using first person narration to create a historical depiction of New York in 1920. However, the historical depiction in the novel advantageous and disadvantageous with the narration point of view Nic Carraway. From the conceptual views of a twenty first century male student examining the text, the reader views the sequence of events through Nic's eyes, portraying females and cultural materialism based on the inferiority of women and black people.
             Nic Carraway is a first person narrator that retells the events. His establishment of his credibility's in the opening define him as a reliable narrator, however his '..inclined to reserve all judgements..' is false when he passes various judgments of other characters. Through his perception and point of view, we get a clear historical depiction of the times, however, this is someone jaded. Nic is a mid-west man who has made a move to the east after the 'Teutonic migration'. His mid-western values as well as being in societies upper echelon create a void in his historical depiction of the 1920s. The portrayal of only a first person narrator is disadvantageous to the historical depiction in the novel, as the reader is limited to his perception, which is bias towards his social status. To a modern reader, this creates a void in the historical representation, as a twenty first century reader wishes not only to here from the perspective of a privileged narrator, but that also from a marginalised perspective.
             Women in the twenty first century are equal to men. However, the narration of The Great Gatsby depicts women somewhat different from our beliefs. Women are fragile, they all confide in men in the text, men chauffeur...
