             In "Dulce et Decorum Est," Wilfred Owen uses a range of literary devices to give the reader a highly realistic portrait of the true horror of war. While the most important part of Owen's poem is the structure, since the poems organization is critical to a clear understanding of the poet's arguments. Owens also makes highly effective use of rhyme, meter, simile, imagery, and rhythm to strengthen his work. The result is a poem that captures the trauma and brutality of war and the horror of lost innocence, and sets this against the lie addressed in the title: it is a sweet and noble thing to die for one's country.
             In "Dulce et Decorum Est," the speaker is Wilfred Owens himself. Owens was in the military in 1915. His experience in the war shows in his poem that he is the speaker. "Dulce et Decorum Est," reveals that Owens had a very traumatizing time during the time that he was enlisted in the war. The brutality of this war put him in a state where he could not forget about the war. One experience, which is written about in this poem, shows how much he went through while fighting for his country. The hospitalization of Owens also gave him more to write about. As written in "Literature A portable Anthology" on page 1411 "He is the most widely recognized of the "war poets," a group of World War I writers who brought the realism of war to poetry. This statement tells how Owens used his time in war to show in his poems the realism of the war.
             Owens addresses himself and the people that he experienced the war with in "Dulce et Decorum Est." Owens addresses himself as well as his platoon in this poem because they are the ones who bring such realism to the piece.
