Commparrison paper

Both Emily Dickenson and Robert Frost are excellent poets, and they have a distinct style of writing all there own. Dickenson's writings seem to be more complex, dark, and hard to read. On the contrary, Frosts poems are easier to read and he tells a story. Both Dickenson and Frost use imagery and metaphors to draw the reader into their world of how they view life and relationships. Even though they use some of the same elements in their writings, they have their own style. Dickenson uses the element of structure to show how life has a beginning and an end in the poem "We grow accustom to the Dark." Frost uses diction to show the simplicity of his word; some words are not used in its literal form, as in the friendship with the two neighbors in the poem "Mending Wall." In the poem by Dickenson, the use of imagery helps the reader get a sense of reality and go through the journey from life to an after life. For example, "Then -fit our Vision to the Dark-And meet the road-erect [.]"(line 8). Dickenson used the word "erect" so the reader can visualize a person standing "erect" or tall, not allowing any fear for what he is being faced with. Dickenson also uses metaphorical imagery because the details given suggest a h

Maybe it is Dickenson's view of how our lives are divided up. The fact that they always meet to "set the wall between once again" (14), justifies the fact that the man want to keep the relationship as is. His poem does not follow the same form as Dickenson; rather his poem is in an open form. In Frosts poem, there are many ways that he uses imagery to illustrate the relationship of the two neighbors. Metaphors are also used by both poets to say one thing and actually mean something else. This quote explains that the neighbors are different but can still be friends and work together. He uses denotation to convey exactly what he wants. When reading Dickenson's poems, one needs to think outside the box to comprehend the poem. To illustrate, "That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it, And spills the upper boulders in the sun" (line 2). The period indicates an end stop or where the person ends up. One last element that Frost uses to complement his voice is diction. Frost structure is just the opposite. Unlike the complexity of Dickenson's poems, Frost writes as if he is telling a story without any complex thoughts. On the other hand, Dickenson uses connotation in her works. There are a lot of metaphors in Dickenson's poems.
