Jonah

JONAH, also known as the "Missionary Prophet", was an Israelite prophet against Nineveh. The author of the book is unknown, on the other hand, according to uniform Jewish and early Christian belief; Jonah wrote this narrative of which he is the central human character. If so, he likely wrote down the account of his ministry shortly after completing it. The book dates back to the eight-century, however, some scholars have suggested that the book is a parable or allegory, and should not be taken literally. But the book itself gives no hint of this and furthermore, Jesus affirmed that Jonah was swallowed by the fish and preached to Nineveh (Matthew 12:39-41), so that leaves no doubt that the events reported in this book happened in history. The entire book is written in Hebrew prose except for Jonah's prayer. In the English Bibles, Jonah is the fifth of twelve Minor Prophets. In the Hebrew canon it belonged to the composite book called "The Twelve". The book of Jonah, the Hebrew word for "Dove", is the most well known of all the Minor Prophets. The key verses in this book is Jonah 4:11 which we will see later in the text.According to 2 Kings 14:25, Jonah was a prophet during the days of Jeroboam II (See 2 Kings 14:23-29

God's mercy in sending His prophet to the Ninevites foreshadowed His plan to send the good news of the gospel "upon the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8). None of us can escape the calling that God has upon our lives. This caused the men to exceedingly fear so they offered a sacrifice unto the LORD and made vows. A believer who is more concerned about the comfort of a plant and creatures than about people dying without knowing God. They came to know that, "You can't run, you can't hide"!Well as we find out in the end of the book of Jonah that God is a merciful and forgiving. Therefore, we should do all things without grumbling or complaining. Jonah was the son of Amittai from Gathhepher, (about four miles north of Nazareth), a town in the tribal territory of Zebulun (Joshua 19:13). At the same time, they were well known throughout the ancient Near East as a potent military threat. But of course Jonah was downstairs fast asleep like many of us are today when the storms are raging in other people's lives. Assyrians, with their capital in Nineveh, were in a period of retrenchment and inner turmoil. We now know that his own ego got in the best of him and he prayed to the Lord and said, "I pray thee, Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that thou art a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repentest of evil. Did he feel as if the timing was wrong, like we sometimes do? Maybe he felt like God was interrupting his plans, you know how it is, we have an agenda and most of the time it doesn't include the will of God. Did Jonah take this for granted or were he shouting and praising God for the blessing because of the intense heat? Whatever the case, he was exceedingly bitter because God didn't destroy Nineveh. But the Lord sent a great storm upon the sea and the ship threatened to break up, the men on board was terrified. Entering into the city in a day's journey, I can only imagine hearing the "Missionary Jonah" crying out, "Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown! " Whether he said more, we are not sure, however, he pronounces God's judgment on the city for its wickedness.
