The struggle of acceptance

The day to day struggles of life has caused many to go astray. Acceptance in society can make or break a person when they feel as if they have no one to turn to. Whether it is society continuously breaking ones character and telling them that they can not strive in life, everyone struggles to feel both accepted and wanted. The first work of literature that illustrated the struggle of acceptance is Sonny's Blues. Sonny's Blues is a short story that depicts the ongoing struggle of a man, who although went through many ups and downs, found a way to still in the end find his inner happiness. Baldwin not only describes Sonny's struggles, but illustrates how his struggles affected those around him. The second work of literature that illustrates the struggle of acceptance is Battle Royal. Battle Royal is a work of literature that illustrates a young mans struggle to succeed in life through education during a time when racism pigeon- hold many African Americans who wanted an education. Society, if you are not both strong minded and strong willed can break you if you allow it. Like many young men growing up in New York City during a time when heroine was bullying its way on the streets, Sonny was sucked into the evilness of drugs. Many

Being in the service, he was unable to guide Sonny in the right direction. " (Baldwin 91) The lack of moral support pushed Sonny to believe that no one understood him, or had faith enough in him that he could be anything he wanted to be. They say that time continuously repeats itself in many different ways. Only having contact with Sonny through letters, he was unable to give Sonny the love and guidance he deserved. Miscommunication can cause a downfall within a family. " (Baldwin 82) This shows that although he was not aware of his doings, Sonny's friend exposed Sonny to using drugs which caused him to throw his life away. " (Baldwin 89) Like in many families there is always someone who is the lost sheep; the one who although is connected to the family by blood, is very distant. In family, it is very necessary to always be there for one another, even it is to make sure he or she is alright. The significance of the title Battle Royal is that the Battle Royal is a boxing match where African American boys were blindfolded where they were not being treated like humans. The ever changing factor of drug usage causes many to crumble. " (Baldwin102) It was music that helped Sonny cope and deal with his demons; it was the music that allowed him to feel free. Set during the late 1940's, Ralph Ellison's Battle Royal is a short story of a man who has to fight society in order to succeed in life. I won't let nothing happen to Sonny. I didn't want to believe that I'd ever see my brother going do, coming to nothing, all that light in his face gone out, in the condition I'd already seen so many others.
