Macbeth as a tragic hero
In the drama Macbeth¸ written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is portrayed as a tragic hero in an unorthodox way. The typical tragic hero is a great man whose actions benefit society. Macbeth is a man who is portrayed as a good man at first who later decays into darkness with assistance from his ambition, Lady Macbeth, and the Witches. At the start of the play the audience hears of Macbeth's bravery from a dying captain,For brave Macbeth,-well he deserves that name,- Disdaining fortune, with his brandish'd steel, Which smok'd with bloody execution, 20 Like valor's minion, Carv'd out his passag tTill he fac'd the slave; And ne'er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, Till he unseam'd him from the nave to the chaps, And fix'd his head upon our battlements. (I, iii, 18-25). Macbeth is a valiant fighter who not only helps his friend in battle, but is also a loving husband. After the battle, Macbeth write his a wife a letter that expresses his affection and longing for her. He is even a good host to the King that he is driven to murder.Macbeth becomes a very ambitious man as soon as he returns home. The reader learns that he has had strong intentions of becoming king befo
Macbeth soon believes everything that the Witches tell him, so he becomes arrogant and egotistical. Like every human being he has his flaws" (Doyle 77). Shakespeare tries to arouse sympathy in the audience with Macbeth. When Macbeth arrives at his home, Lady Macbeth does not even show concern for how he is doing, she simply wants to know about the witches and Macbeth becoming king. This quote sums up Lady Macbeth's plot to drive Macbeth into killing the King. Macbeth is a tragic hero because he dies for his actions which were inspired by other individuals and not entirely by his own thoughts. It is she who is truly ambitious in her heart. Macbeth's feelings towards killing the King did not fully arise from deep within him until Lady Macbeth got to him. This ambition causes him to murder Duncan. When you durst do it, then you were a man" (I, vii, 55). Lady Macbeth is a crucial cause in the corruption of Macbeth. It was Lady Macbeth who pesters this ambition out of him, and the witches who awoke the sleeping ambition from the beginning. Macbeth dies for what he believes in; he believes in the witches, and he dies because of their two-sided predictions. She wants to become the Queen so much that she would drive her husband into killing the King.
