Moses and the Exodus

Response Paper about Moses and the Exodus
The story of Moses and the Exodus is probably one of the most commonly talked about stories of how God will lead, care for, and protect his followers. I think there are many reasons why the Exodus might be important to the Jews of the 6th century BCE. A reason could be that it shows the Israelites were the "chosen" people of God, since He led them away from captivity into the "promise land." God was finally fulfilling his promise to his people for them to have their own land in which they could live without being ruled by non-Israelites. Another possible importance to the Jews could be that it shows all the non-Jews that the Jew's God is all knowing and all powerful and he always has a plan. Even though the Jews struggled for many years, their God had a plan for them and He never forgot the promise he made to them. Another reason could be to show that their God will protect over them, using his awesome and holy powers to give them that protection. A great example of this was the sending of plagues into Egypt because the Pharaoh would not release God's people. Then after the release, allowing Moses to part the waters so the Israelites could escape and not be recaptured or killed.
I have a couple of ideas on why the story of the Exodus was invoked during the civil rights movements of the 1950s and 1960s. I feel the main reason they used the story was to show how God delivered his people from the evil that controlled over them and how he led them into the promise land were they were free and equal. This story could have been used to show the parallels of the Israelites and the people fighting for their civil rights. Forecasting their journey into their modern day "promised land" of the 1950s and 1960s were they could have equal opportunity and were they could live without worry, fear, and racism.
