The Old Man and The Sea

"He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish." (pg.9.) It is evident that from the very beginning of this novel Santiago, the main character has been plagued with obstacles. Santiago has been targeted as "salao" which is the worst form of unlucky and his fishing mate Manolin has had to leave him due to this unluckiness. It seems that the only thing left to do is give up but defeat is not in the vocabulary of Santiago. Santiago disregards all of the obstacles that he faces and decides to go out and fish once again. Santiago is hopeful in the most dismal situations. He even decides to take it a step further and go deeper out to sea than any of the other fishermen in response to his bad luck. Santiago is very serious abou

But the old man thought, I have such a heart too and my feet and hands are like theirs. Instead, Santiago lets the line go little by little and allows the marlin to pull the boat in hopes he will grow tired. ) When Santiago finally hooks the great marlin he is unable to kill him, instead he must wait because of the fish's large size. As he waits for the marlin to loose strength he frequently wishes that Manolin were with him, and makes mention of the face that, "No one should be alone in their old age. Although Santiago is planning on killing and selling the great marlin he still respects him deeply, "Fish, I love you and respect you very much. "Most people are heartless about turtles because a turtle's heart will beat for hours after he has been cut up and butchered. "He kept them straighter than any one did, so that each level in the darkness of the stream there would be a bait waiting exactly where he wished for it to be for any fish that swam there. ) Although Santiago wishes that the boy were with him he does not wallow in his own self pity, instead he chooses to display courage and accept that he has to do this alone.
