Issues in the Workplace
In this paper, we were asked to identify a work related problem as well as a solution to this problem. Because there are numerous problems in today's workplace, we have decided to identify several important issues and possible resolutions. To improve the quality of life in the workplace, we have decided to identify and list the possible corrections that may be taken to rectify several dilemmas or issues that may arise in the workplace. The issues that we will cover are as follows: sexual harassment, general harassment, fraternization, discrimination, underpaid employees, managing work time efficiently, and cultural barriers. We find that these issues are most important for both the employer and the employee to overcome in order to have a satisfying and stable work life. Sexual harassment is an issue that has raised many concerns in the workplace. Sexual harassment, as described in Webster's American Dictionary (1997), can be defined as "unwelcome sexual advances, especially when made by an employer or superior, usually with compliance as a condition of continued employment or promotion" (p. 719). We suggest that all employees be protected from coercion, intimidation, retaliation, interference or discrimination for filing a complaint or assisting any company's Review Board with an investigation. Personal life and how it affects the work place is another issue that must be addressed. Every company should be free from harassment of any kind. Every business should be an equal opportunity employer and make all employment decisions on the basis of job related qualifications. We understand that every employee will have personal needs that they must attend to from time to time, and the management of most businesses expects this as well. If a supervisor or member of management is fraternizing with a subordinate, the punishment should be immediate termination for both of the involved parties. We propose that supervisors and members of management should treat all subordinate employees in the same professional fashion. "One fundamental principle of the ADA is that individuals with disabilities who want to work and are qualified to work must have an equal opportunity to work" (par. We also suggest that all existing employees be scheduled to attend a cultural-diversity-training course, and that these courses be regulated by each company's Human Resources Department. We recommend that general harassment include, without limitation, verbal harassment (derogatory statements, slurs, name-calling), physical harassment (assault, physical interference), visual harassment (cartoons, drawings, postings, letters, emails) and any other type of harassing insinuations or implications. Favoritism should not be tolerated in any form or manner. Harassment should not be tolerated and should be strictly prohibited. We suggest that employees be encouraged to build a support network among themselves and practice everyday methods of stress reduction, including: taking a brief break, walking around for several minutes, or getting away from the situation for a few minutes. Another cultural barrier would be religion. Next, we believe that employees must eliminate or modify their personal stressors.
