Catcher in the rye
Pencey Prep is kicking Holden Caulfield out for flunking most of his classes. He begins the story of his last day at Pencey Prep by telling how he stood at the top of Thomsen Hill, preparing to leave the school and trying to feel "some kind of a good-by." Holden is supposed to be in New York with the fencing team, but he lost all of their equipment on the subway so they had to come home.Holden Caulfield is the protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye, and the most important function of these early chapters is to establish the basics of his personality.
Stradlater tells Holden he has a date, then goes to go shave. He can be a whole different person when he has it on!Chapter 4 - Jane GallagherHolden follows Stradlater to the can and watches him shave. He has to stop reading because Ackley is being really annoying. Spencer is Holden's favorite teacher even though he failed his history lesson. Holden's Red Hunting Cap is a way for him to escape reality. He started to cut his toe nails on Holden's floor, after many attempts of telling Ackley to stop he finally does. Ackley finally leaves when Holden's roommate Stradlater (who Ackley hates) comes in. He used to play checkers with her and she kept her kings in the back row because they looked pretty. He finds out that he is going on a date with an old friend of Holden's (Jane Gallagher). What bothers him the most, in these chapters and throughout the book, is the hypocrisy and ugliness around him, which diminish the innocence and beauty of the external world-the unpleasantness of Spencer's sickroom, for instance, and his hairless legs sticking out of his pajamas. He visits Spencer even though he failed Spencer's history class, and he seems to respond to Mrs.
