It costs and is paid by tears, sorrow, and death. Pilate was the only character who found freedom without relocating her roots. She found that she could be free in the mist of oppression. She learned that freedom was a state of mind and not a "state." The state were Pilate abided could not enslave her with its discrimatory laws and prejudices. She found freedom in discovering her own self worth and in freeing others. She was able to fly without wings! As a result Milkman is able to learn the theme of flight
